19th-Dec-2009 11:45 pm - Sorry Avatar.
MarkSCarlson haiku
Prompt: What’s the best action adventure epic ever made?
Well, for starters, despite the fact that Avatar is sponsoring this prompt, it is not that. Um, at all. I have not even seen Avatar (or lots of other ACTION ADVENTURE EPICs, for that matter), but I'm pretty damn sure of that.

As far as my personal taste, I'd have to go with Silverado, I think. I mean, it's got action (shooting dudes!), adventure (riding around on horses and shooting guys with also some kinda mystery shit packed in, or whatever constitutes adventure), and epic...-ness (awesome story, and it was SUPPOSED to have a sequel, making the story even longer. At least, that's what "epic" USED to mean. I'm not so sure anymore; if it's supposed to be some ridiculous spin on "awesome," as you young kids [with your long hair and loud music] have been saying, Silverado has it covered.)
Also good: PotC I, the Borne series (especially ALL OF THEM), The Princess Bride, and To Kill a Mockingbird (shut up, it is one of the best movies ever in EVERY genre).

Also, I graduated (awesome), I'm in DeWitt until the 27th (also great; I love food and being lazy), I've started an awesome knitting project and have finished several books (OH MY GOD I LOVE BOOKS). Now I just have to, you know, finish your grad applications before the deadline, you numbskull. Not that I'm repressing stress or anything. Or avoiding responsibility. No, never that.

Some awesome quotes to come; I left them downstairs, and I'm all cozy in my bed. And also lazy.
11th-Dec-2009 03:38 pm - Prompt etc.
new year
Prompt: What’s your favorite movie quote of all time?
Well, I have four, but they're all from the same movie, so it's ok:
"He saaaaaw uuuuuuus!"
"Aaaaaaaiiiin't thaaaaaaaaaaaaaat sweeeet, Reeeeeeed?"
"LOOK MAW!"
and
"...Sheriff Langston, come quick... *stomp stomp stomp*"

They're from Silverado, four horribly delivered lines in a spectacular movie. Really, I just love them the best because my family says them at random times. Also amazing, though not so terrible:
"A lotta things changed when my father died."
Damn I love that movie.

In other news, I never have to attend another class or exam as an undergrad ever again, and commencement rehearsal was just as boring as I thought it would be. But it was fun to see all the people I know who are graduating, and also there was pizza.

P.S. It's fucking COLD outside!
9th-Dec-2009 10:36 am - YOU CANNOT BE SERIOUS.
MarkSCarlson haiku
In all the years I've been at school (18.5 if you include preschool & kindergarten, but who's counting?), I have never once sneezed at a snow day. Maybe they were on a day I didn't have classes once I got to college, but at least all my friends were off too, or whatnot.

Not so today.

Today would have been my LAST ANYTHING as an undergrad, and now it's postponed 'til Friday because NMU just wanted to fuck with me one last time while it still could. Jesus Christ. I just wanted to be able to hang out, get all my OTHER stuff done, and not have any responsibilities for a few days. Now, when we go to Jasper Ridge for Trivia Night on Thursday, I'll have to keep an eye on the clock to make sure I'm not out too late. Now, even though I did my studying last night, I'll have to take time out of all the other things I have to do to study AGAIN so I don't fail my tests.

Not that the tests matter TOO much, but really? Really.

P.S. While I'm on my angry rant, I'd just like to share that not only did NMU make me pay for the honor cord that I EARNED, but the ugly graduation hat that THEY MEASURED ME FOR does not, in fact, fit.
4th-Dec-2009 09:24 pm - Oh my god, classes are OVER.
MarkSCarlson haiku
I will never attend another class as an undergrad, and that is the best thing. Only 3 exams and a paper (which I haven't started) stand between me and graduation. Of course, I have to finish applying to MSU next week too, but shut up. I'm basking in happiness.

Most of this week was beyond horrible, to be precise. Between Monday at 8am and Thursday at 9pm, I got 8 hours of sleep (5 on Monday, 3 on Tuesday, and none on Wednesday). It was... spectacular. The amazing part is that I functioned (mostly) normally until about 8pm on Thursday. I have no idea how this happened, but I hope I never do it again to compare my findings. The craptastic report that I was working on for most of those days got done though, and now I'll never have to go to class for undgergrad stuff again (I keep saying that to myself to make it real).

After my LAST CLASS (woooooooooo!) today, Anjila invited me out to Stucko's for drinks and griping, and about 1/2 the class ended up coming, so that was awesome. I had breakfast (a Long Island and a pesto chicken sandwich [which, due to starvation and sleep deprivation, was the most delicious thing ever]), and we all hung out and talked about how much we hated the prof for our class and how bullshit all our reports were and how atrocious our presentations had been. Really good times. It was a nice cap to the END OF CLASSES, and the fact that it was spontaneous made it even more fun.

I'm getting a little pumped about being a grad student here next year. Mostly I'm looking forward to teaching, which is hilarious because I always said I'd never do that. I've been planning what posters from my room I should take to decorate my office, and I need to actually register for a class (boo). I'm looking forward (in a masochistic way) to working on my project too; I'm planning on doing some genetics stuff with Dr. Lindsay, because I hate genetics and consequently haven't learned much about it. That's a good reason for doing research on it, right? Shut up, I think so. OH! I found out what I'm teaching next semester too: BI 111 labs. SO, if you're here and you're going to take 111, get in the Wed 1-3, Thurs 10-12 or Thurs 6:30-8:30 lab, because they will be the best.

I'm also excited because I'm slated to give a presentation to the current class (5th or 6th graders) of one of my middle school teachers who was totally awesome. I basically get to go in and crow about how awesome science is, and talk about my job with the NPS and show them my sweet hat and pictures, and talk about how important college is. YAY! Impressionable children (More teaching? When did I start wanting to do that? What has happened to me?!?)! But seriously, I'm super pumped.

Now I should finish cleaning and filing. Or do the dishes. Or clean my fish tank. But instead I'll give you quotes, and then go give myself a facial with this awesome facial stuff I got from Arbonne, because I'm a terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad person.

-Exam week will be awesome.
-Still eating my mounds of Halloween candy
-Curly Brace (the last gerbil!) turned 3 on Thursday, which is about 100 in gerbil-years!
-Went riding, and it was awesome even if I sucked.

More will follow, mostly quotes, when I have time.
10th-Nov-2009 11:18 pm - So much to say...
MarkSCarlson haiku
...but I'm lazy and also crazy-busy, so you'll have to make due.

First off, I'm doing the whole grad school application thing, which is slowly eating my soul. And I'm only looking at 3 schools. Christ. Anyway, it's not going badly, so that's good, I guess. Except current school seems to get in the way, um, all the time. And by the time I HAVE time, the deadlines will be past. Figures. But seriously, it takes up SO much time.

In actually positive news, I'm 98% sure I have a job for next semester lined up now, so I can stay here in MQT. Yay! It's nice to know that people like me and want to pay me to do things!

I was in DeWitt last weekend for a wedding (2 friends from High School), and that was really fun. Got to reconnect with some people, watch others make complete asses of themselves, and generally have a good time.

Now I have to go do more things that are important. But I will continue to listen to ETH live on the internets! I love them, even if they're playing way undertempo for some reason. Maybe because it looks like they're playing in a little club-thing for boring upperclass people.

***EDIT***
I heard your cries from afar, and have returned to provide for your souls:

I'm a sloth
That's what's really important in life anyway, right? Jobs, places to live, fleeting. Quotes stay with you FOREVER.

Or they do me, anyway.

Here they are. )
25th-Oct-2009 11:16 am - Oh man, so much to say.
Leaves
For starters, I've been keeping busy mostly with homework and especially with grad school stuff. Oh Jesus. I don't even really want to talk about it, except to say I had a dream 2 nights ago that I got an e-mail from Lars (one of the PIs I'm interested in working under) that just said "awesome, see you in September." If only, if only. But it's going ok so far, just super duper stressful.

Mom, Dad & Geoff came up this weekend for my concert! It was ok. Intonation issues all over the place, people messing things up that they've never messed up before (I think the trumpet blew his chops... oh no), and one totally crazy man made it... interesting, to be sure. But my solos went well, and that's the important part, right? :D

I'm trying to figure out what I'm going to do with myself between December and April-ish. I want to stay up here, and now I have two different options of how to do so, but I need a job so I can, you know, pay for it. Lame. The hard part about finding a job is that there is NO way I could even think about starting it until I am graduated (so swamped...), and I'd rather not work in December because I'm selfish. Which leaves January, when I already want to be up here. I have money saved, but I'm going to be, you know, saving that, and also I'm buying a car (oh shite), and I'll have to pay for crap on that (worst plan ever) so I can, you know, drive it to work. It's some catch, that Catch-22 (It's the best we've got).

Anyway, I'm actually making time to post this for a very important thing: LOTS AND LOTS OF QUOTES. )
5th-Oct-2009 07:50 pm - I'm busy doing homework
The Descent
So no real post, but I had some quotes I can't help but share:

Me: Could you loan me about 36 hours, so I could finish all my work?
Rita: I can totally do that.
Me: Great! I’ll get you Prince William for Christmas.

Talking about identical twins
“Well, if you give one a black eye, you can always tell them apart. ‘Francis is the one in the cast!’” ~Geoff

“Dude, you got rape on the GRE! Not like ‘raped,’ but like ‘hold it down and have your way with it.’ And it cried the whole time.” ~Geoff.

“Moose are transportation, currency and a form of government up there!” ~Geoff

“Phil, if you sat on me, my legs would be amputated.” (Laura)
“Maybe then you wouldn’t be on crutches so much!” (Kyle)

“Phil, has your fly been unzipped this whole time?” (Rita)
“What can I say, I’m lonely.” (Kyle)

“Well, there are cool mountain-bike trails around there!” (Laura)
“Which means you could also hike them.” (me)
“But biking is cooler. Because there’s the possibility of death!” (Laura)
“Well, I was planning on picking one person to be poisoned every night, so that should be taken care of.” (Zach)

“I’ll internet it to you.” ~Zach

“The temptation to embezzle is great.” ~Zach

“I think we should just call sculpin ‘sculpin’ instead of messing around with ‘mottled’ and ‘spiny.’” (Joseph)
“Fine. Anything else we should be glomming together?” (Dr. Leonard)
“Well, I’ve been thinking that if we just took all the salmonids…” (Joseph) This is funny because his entire project is based around interactions between salmonids (steelheads and brook trout)

“I hesitate to ask, but someone should probably take the new snowmobile out and see how it goes before we try to get to the middle of nowhere with it.” (Dr. Leonard)
“Yeah, I’d like to know a bit more about it too, like loading, gas mileage—” (Chris)
“—how fast it can go—” (Joseph)
“—at what angle it’ll flip over…” (Julie)

Also, I was just listening to Rite of Spring, and all I could think of was evolution and the dinosaurs and extinction and the earthquakes, etc. Like from Fantasia. Because Walt Disney brainwashed me.

Darwin
Prompt: If you broke a mirror, would you worry about bad luck even if you're not superstitious? Would you walk under a ladder or cross a black cat's path on a dare? Is there anything you're superstitious about?

No, I'm not worried about mirrors. HOWEVER, there are a few things I'm superstitious about. For example:
Reed thread colors (Green just doesn't turn out, I swear)
Pencils I use on tests (shut up)

That's all I can think of at the moment, but whatever.
